What is IVF?

In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a widely used treatment for conception in the world. It is a treatment that helps in the conception of a baby for partners having infertility issues. It is a form of assisted reproductive technology (ART) practised across the globe.

It is a set of processes that assist in the union of the male and the female egg in a laboratory, i.e. externally. The procedure uses eggs, sperms and embryos of both the partners or of an anonymous donor. The fertilized egg or eggs are transferred to the uterus of the mother or surrogate to achieve pregnancy.

Nisha IVF offers IVF treatment in Ahmedabad safely and most reliably. The centre is equipped with the latest technology and expertise for a successful IVF treatment in and around Ahmedabad. Our team of doctors are one of the best ivf doctors in Ahmedabad having treated more than 1000 patients.

Steps in IVF Procedure

Step 1 – Prescription and consumption of birth control pills

Our IVF doctor will prescribe birth control pills. You will have to take these pills on day 3 of your cycle for a minimum of two weeks. There are two reasons for this medical advice:

  • These pills will assist your ovaries to respond better to the stimulation medicines.
  • These pills enable better scheduling of procedure as per your work calendar and the availability of the medical team for further steps.

It is perfectly normal to experience bleeding after consuming these pills. Please inform the doctor about it and continue to consume them.

Step 2 – Ovarian stimulation

Our IVF expert will suggest an injection of medicines that contain follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), a luteinizing hormone (LH) or a combination of both. You may require to take these injections daily for nearly two weeks. The number of injections depends upon the body’s response to the injected hormones. In an IVF cycle, the IVF doctor can retrieve approximately 5 to 15 eggs.

Ovarian stimulation

Step 3 – Egg retrieval

The egg retrieval process requires sedation. . Our doctor performs a transvaginal or abdominal ultrasound with a needle or to identify and retrieve the eggs. In a short span of 20 – 25 minutes, the doctor can retrieve multiple eggs. The doctor will choose only the matured eggs for incubation and the healthiest ones for fertilization.

You may feel cramping or fullness or pressure after the egg retrieval procedure.

Egg retrieval

Step 4 – Sperm retrieval

The male partner provides his semen sample on the day of the fertilization. If required, a surgical procedure (testicular aspiration) can be used to extract the sperm from the testicle. Donor sperms also are taken as per the infertility issue in the male partner. The semen or the sperm is sent to a laboratory for further processing.

Sperm retrieval

Step 5 – Fertilization

Our IVF doctor will advise a conventional insemination procedure. In this, mature eggs and healthy sperms are mixed and incubated in the laboratory. In case of failure of earlier IVF cycles or poor quality of semen, the sperm is directly injected into the mature egg. This process is known as the Intracytoplasmic sperm injection – ICSI procedure of fertilization.

Fertilization

Step 6 – Embryo Development and Embryo Transfer

Upon fertilization, the embryo begins to develop rapidly. The period of incubation is two to five days. The well-developed and fertilized embryo is then transferred into the womb. In case of a failure of previous IVF cycles, our doctor may suggest assisted hatching to ensure proper embryo transfer for a successful IVF.

Embryo transfer is a relatively painless procedure as it performed under sedation. The IVF surgeon transfers the selected embryos into the uterus. First, the doctor inserts a catheter into the uterus through the vagina and the cervix. The doctor uses a syringe which helps to transfer the selected embryos into the uterus. The embryo will implant in the lining of the uterus within 5 to 10 days after the egg retrieval.

What happens after the IVF procedure?

Only after 12 to 15 days, the IVF expert will do a pregnancy test to ascertain whether you are pregnant or not. Meanwhile, you can do everyday activities, but it is advisable to avoid vigorous activities that cause discomfort.

One full cycle of IVF takes approximately three weeks or more.

      How safe is IVF treatment?

IVF treatment is very safe. A great deal of its success depends upon the medical expertise and the health of the patient. If you have chosen an expert IVF doctor for your IVF cycle, rest assured it will be a safe and a seamless procedure.

What is the ideal age for conceiving through IVF technology?

Success in IVF cycle depends on a great deal on the age of the female. Females below the age of 35 have a high chance of a successful IVF cycle. With increasing age, the chances reduce slightly. There have been instances of successful IVF cycles in the age group of 35 – 40 who have done IVF at our centre. Females patients above 42 years have low chances of successful IVF pregnancy.

My first IVF cycle was unsuccessful. What should I do now?

Relax, you can go for another IVF cycle after a couple of months. Our IVF doctors could begin with understanding the reason for its failure. They can suggest a change in the hormonal medication or a preimplantation genetic screening for transfer of the healthy embryo.

Will I have more than one child through IVF?

Well, this depends upon your health condition and your IVF specialist. It is best to discuss the number of implantation of embryos into your womb. You can deliver twins or triplets if more than one embryo is transferred to your womb. Nisha IVF centre has a very high success rate in IVF cycles, so you trust us to offer you a comprehensive and seamless IVF experience.
