TESA, PESA, and TESE in Ahmedabad
One in 100 men has no sperms in their semen. Previously men with azoospermia would consider themselves to be sterile and unable to father a child.
If you have no or fewer sperms in your semen, it indicates that you can’t avail standard fertility treatments.
You can benefit from the advanced sperm retrieval techniques such as the TESA, PESA, and TESE in Ahmedabad and still father a child.
After the invention of advanced sperm retrieval techniques, men suffering from azoospermia (lack of sperms) realized the problem could be infection, injury, or blockages. These advanced procedures are for men with irreparable obstruction, resulting in azoospermia.
Sperm retrieval techniques like TESA, PESA, and TESE have their own merits. Sperm retrieved through either of these procedures are used with ICSI treatments to enable the man to become the biological father to his child rather than using donor sperm.
At Nisha IVF Centre, we perform the most advanced sperm retrieval techniques, the TESA, PESA, and TESE in Ahmedabad to help males become biological fathers.

What is Sperm Retrieval?
Sperm Retrieval techniques like TESA, PESA and TESE are procedures to remove the sperm directly from the source.
The TESA, PESA and TESE male infertility treatments for sperm retrieval involve small surgical procedures that directly obtain sperm samples from the testes or surrounding tissue.
Who is suitable for sperm retrieval techniques?
Sperm retrieval procedures like TESA, PESA and TESE are for men who produce sperm but can’t release the sperm during the ejaculate.
Men suffering from the following conditions are suitable for sperm retrieval procedures:
- Men who have an obstruction that blocks the discharge of the sperm from the testes can be due to an injury or infection.
- Men who have undergone a vasectomy but now are willing to become a father.
- Men with congenital absence of vas deferens (a tube that discharges the sperm from the testicles).
- Men with nil sperm count such that the sperm don’t reach the vas (Non-obstructive azoospermia).
Different Procedures for Sperm Retrieval:
Each method of sperm retrieval is slightly different from the other. The various sperm retrieval procedures are as follows:
TESA (Testicular Sperm Aspiration)
- Andrologists use TESA primarily for men who are suffering from obstructive azoospermia.
- Color Doppler Ultrasonography is used in the TESA procedure to ensure that blood vessels are avoided.
- The andrologist administers local anaesthesia to the patient and inserts a thin needle into the testicular substance.
- Further, they aspirate the fluid and examine it for the presence of sperms. Then, process the aspirated tissue in the embryology laboratory. The embryologist can use the extracted sperms for ICSI.
Advantages of TESA :
- TESA is an effortless procedure.
- It is a non-surgical procedure for sperm retrieval.
- It does not require additional training for the experts in Infertility procedures.
PESA (Percutaneous Epididymal Sperm Aspiration)
- Percutaneous Epididymal Sperm Aspiration (PESA) does not need a surgical incision.
- The embryologist passes a small needle directly through the scrotal skin and aspirates the fluid. Then, they retrieve the sperms from the fluid and prepares them for ICSI.
Advantages of PESA:
- The procedure is simple.
- Avoids open surgery.
- It can be repeated as it is quick to perform.
- Each procedure can collect an adequate amount of sperm.
TESE (Testicular Sperm Extraction)
- TESE is a surgical sperm retrieval technique. Fertility experts commonly recommend TESE for men who have no sperm in their ejaculate either due to a blockage in the path between sperm production and ejaculation or partial or complete failure in sperm production testes.
- TESE is a simple, surgical biopsy of the testis. It involves collecting sperm from the testicular tissue.
- The embryologist can use the retrieved sperms to achieve fertilization of eggs in the laboratory. However, as the number of sperm that is retrieved is often low, it is necessary to combine TESE with ICSI.
Advantages of TESE:
- TESE involves the biopsies of seminiferous tubules containing sperm.
- It involves biopsy only of selective tubules. Hence there is less damage to the testicles.
- Using TESE, a large tissue area can be dissected, making it easier to find sperm cells.
What is the success rate of sperm retrieval procedures?
- Advanced sperm retrieval techniques have transformed male infertility treatment in the past decade.
- Men suffering from the congenital bilateral absence of the vas deferens or reproductive tract obstruction can now achieve pregnancy from their sperms using these latest techniques.
- The IVF treatment utilizing PESA or TESA sperm is a routine procedure at Nisha IVF Centre. It has a comparable success rate to IVF or ICSI using fresh semen.
